Parts of South Rotherham and nearby communities were left without water earlier this week after a major electrical fault at the Aughton Pumping Station caused widespread disruption to the local water network.

According to residents on social media and community groups, many households reported low pressure or no water at all for hours, with some saying supplies had been down for over 12 hours. The outage affected areas across multiple parts of the region.

Power Restored but Issues Remain

Yorkshire Water confirmed that the power issue at Aughton Pumping Station has now been rectified and the site’s electrical systems brought back online. Their latest incident updates show that water supply is being restored and the network is being refilled following the outage.

However, while power has returned and the majority of customers should now see water coming back into their homes, many households are still reporting ongoing problems — including *intermittent supply, low pressure or discoloured water, which can occur when natural sediments are disturbed as the system recharges. Yorkshire Water advises that discolouration is not harmful and recommends running taps to help clear the network and says flushing is underway in affected areas.

Community and Official Response

During the incident, Yorkshire Water deployed bottled water distribution stations to support those without supply, though these have now been demobilised as normal supplies return and sites are cleaned up. Compensation for impacted customers is being considered on a case-by-case basis under the company’s customer charter.

Local residents had been vocal on social platforms about the length of time without water, highlighting the disruption to daily routines and concerns about basic household needs during the outage.

What Residents Should Do Now

  • If your water is still discoloured or low pressure, running cold taps for several minutes can help clear and normalise supply.

  • Any ongoing complete loss of water should be reported directly to Yorkshire Water’s emergency contact line so the company can investigate specific site issues.

  • Residents are reminded that water quality disturbances after an outage can be common and are usually temporary as the system refills.
