Rother Radio – Special Announcement Love Local, Love Music!
today03/03/2026
A viral social media trend encouraging school pupils to divide into “red” and “blue” groups and engage in organised violence has been reported in parts of the UK — and posts referencing Rotherham schools have now appeared online.
The so-called “School Wars” trend has been circulating on platforms including TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram. In some areas of the country, schools have issued warnings to families and police forces have increased patrols as a precaution.
Now, Winterhill School has written to parents and carers after posts naming local schools were shared on social media.
In a letter to families, Head of School Dr Reeder said:
“We are writing to inform you about a concerning social media trend, known as ‘School Wars’, which has now appeared in posts linked to schools in Rotherham.”
The school stressed that although similar content nationally has encouraged pupils to divide into opposing groups and engage in organised violence, there is no evidence of any planned incidents involving Winterhill students.
Dr Reeder added:
“Please be reassured that, although posts have circulated naming Rotherham schools, we have no evidence of any planned incidents involving our students. This message is a precaution to keep families informed and prepared.”
Winterhill confirmed it is taking proactive steps to safeguard pupils, including working closely with local safeguarding partners, increasing vigilance during arrival, break and dismissal times, and monitoring any further online activity referencing local schools.
Parents and carers are being urged to monitor their child’s social media use, speak openly about staying safe online, and encourage them to travel directly home after school rather than attending meet-ups arranged online.
Families with concerns are advised to contact their school directly.
Rother Radio understands there have been no confirmed incidents in Rotherham linked to the trend.
