Staples Opticians in Wath upon Dearne, O’Brien Fey Opticians in Wellgate and Wickersley Eye Clinic are backing the College of Optometrists’ call for people to make eye health a priority in 2026 and have offered some top tips to ensure a good outlook this New Year.

Regular eye examinations play a crucial role in the early detection of conditions such as glaucoma, diabetes, and high blood pressure, often before other symptoms appear.

Tips shared by the practices include encouraging all adults to make sure they attend a regular eye examination, eating a healthy balanced diet, using sun protection and taking regular screen time detoxes.

Tracey Plummer, practice manager at Staples Opticians in High Street, Wath upon Dearne said: “Eating a wide variety of strong-coloured fruit and vegetables such as blueberries, sweetcorn, peppers, kale and spinach, may support good eye health and reduce the risk of macular degeneration.”

Following a healthy diet will also help maintain a healthy weight and keep blood pressure under control, reducing the risk of conditions such as diabetes and stroke, which can affect vision.

Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from sunshine has been linked to eye conditions including cataract and potentially to age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Colette Robinson, a frame stylist at O’Brien Fey Opticians in Wellgate, Rotherham, added: “People should make sure they have good quality, dark sunglasses with UV protection and the UKCA or CE mark. Exposure to winter sun can be just as damaging, so wearing sunglasses in winter is just as important.”

With more people spending longer on digital devices, particularly in the winter when more time is spent indoors, the importance of protecting eyes from strain is greater than ever.

The 20-20-20 rule is an effective habit for people to take on board this year.Top of Form

Sarah Hewitt, optometrist at Wickersley Eye Clinic in Bawtry Road, Wickersley said: “Every 20 minutes, take a moment to focus on an object roughly 20 feet away for a minimum of 20 seconds. This short break helps relax your eye muscles and can reduce discomfort, dryness, and blurred vision that often comes from extended screen time.

“Maintaining good eye health involves more than simply achieving clear vision or ensuring your glasses or contact lenses have the correct prescription. Routine eye examinations are essential for detecting conditions like glaucoma, diabetes, and high blood pressure at an early stage, often before any noticeable symptoms develop.

“We encourage all adults to keep up with their regular eye tests and invite everyone to help share this message alongside the College of Optometrists.”
