Rother Radio – Special Announcement Love Local, Love Music!
today10/11/2025

It commissioned a survey which found that 51% of people were unaware of the opportunity to make a claim on certain goods.
Younger travellers were found to be the most informed, with 69% of 18 to 34-year-olds saying they are aware of the opportunity to claim, compared with 38% of those over 65 and a third (33%) of people aged 55 to 64, according to the research among 1,000 people in September.
Abta said that in many countries, travellers can claim back VAT on eligible goods bought from participating retailers when taking them home, provided the right steps are followed before leaving the EU.
Spending thresholds and rates for refunds vary across Europe, it added.
The organisation, which represents UK travel agents, tour operators and the wider travel industry, said holidaymakers would need to request a tax-free form to fill out and show their passport at the time of purchase.
Refunds may be processed when people leave the EU, at an airport, port or train station, where people will find kiosks or stands, Abta said.
It cautioned that some goods and services may be excluded from refunds, with common exclusions being alcohol and tobacco products, food and drink consumed immediately and items used while in the country.
Graeme Buck, director of communications at Abta, said: “Nobody wants to miss out on money which they are entitled to.
“Be a VAT victor and know how to claim VAT refunds to make those holiday spending sprees in Europe go that little bit further.
“It’s always worth asking at the till to see if your purchase is eligible.”
Here are some suggestions from Abta for holidaymakers:
1. Ask at the till if the shop offers VAT refunds for non-EU residents.
2. Keep your receipts and complete the refund form at the point of purchase.
3. Before leaving the EU, get your forms validated at the kiosks at your departure point.
