The devastated parents of a baby who went to sleep and “never woke up” have paid tribute to their “gummy bear”.

Baby Avery was just five-months-old when she died shortly before Christmas last year.

Avery’s mum and dad, who did not want to be named, said that she had been in good spirits the day she died, but she passed away unexpectedly.

Her mum, from Sheffield, told YorkshireLive: “She passed away, but the night before she wasn’t poorly and she was the most giggliest baby ever; kicking her legs and smiling as she does.”

The tot, who would have turned six-months-old yesterday (Thursday, January 13), was known to her adoring parents as “gummy bear”, because she was always smiling and showing off her toothless grin.

“We used to call her our gummy bear because every time she smiled all you could see were her gums and she smiled 24/7,” said her dad, who has been left reeling by the loss of his “bright, blue-eyed daughter”.

He continued: “When it came to December 1, I was singing Christmas songs and when I was singing to her she was singing back to me, in the way she did with little whines.

“We used to go on drives and take her to the countryside and her first holiday was Ingoldmells, she liked walking on the sand and the sand going between her toes.”

Avery’s mum said her beloved daughter was happy and affectionate, always wanting to be cuddled and to be around her parents.

She said: “She was very giggly, very smiley and she’s got bright big blue eyes. From the day she was born I always called her beautful, so every time she was sat on the settee or in her bouncer I’d tell her how beautiful she was and she’d always smile and make her cooing noises.

“She was just giggly all the time and kicking her legs, trying to speak and if you ignored her she’d get louder and louder and louder. She loved being kissed all the time and being loved and cuddled.”

The couple, who also have a two-year-old son, are now expecting their third child and Avery’s mum said that her pregnancy has been helping with her grief and stress.

“I’m sixteen weeks pregnant, so I’m trying to keep us not stressed, as I should be because you can’t be too stressed when you’re pregnant,” she said.

And Avery’s dad has said he hopes their baby looks a bit like Avery, so that he gets the chance to see a part of her grow up.

He said: “It’s hard to explain but I want our new baby to look like her and then I can still look at an actual baby growing up but still see Ava in our new baby.”

The couple are now facing the heartbreaking wait for baby Avery’s funeral, which they hope will be “bright and beautiful”.

Her mum said: “From the minute she was born she had white and pink and all her blankets were pink and white, so everything she had was pink and white.

“We’ve asked everyone to wear something pink and white, because we don’t want a funeral to be dull with black and sadness, we want it to be beautiful and bright like she was.”
