Brothers in shock after unexpectedly pulling car from River Don

share close

This is the moment a stolen car was unexpectedly pulled out of a river in Doncaster.

It is understood, thieves broke into a woman’s home on January 1 and then took off in her black Vauxhall Astra.

The car was then pulled out of the River Don off Clay Lane by magnet fishers almost two weeks later, as these shocking pictures show.

Jack Moores and his brother say they are still shocked and surprised by the unusual discovery, which they made yesterday at around 12pm.

“Me and my brother were magnet fishing and we pulled the stolen car out,” said the 25-year-old who lives in Doncaster.

“We did a reg check online and it said it was taxed and tested and then we rang the police because we weren’t sure if anybody was in it or not.

“Police then came and said it was stolen and while we were watching the police, we searched the number plate on Facebook and it brought up a post of someone reporting the car as stolen.”

Jack, who has been magnet fishing for around two years, said the car was not “the weirdest thing” he and his friends have pulled out of rivers and ponds.

“My friend pulled a live hand-grenade out in Lincoln,” he said. “We’ve had motorbikes, guns, knives – all sorts.”

South Yorkshire Police have been approached for more information.
