Meadowhall customers slam ‘appalling’ scenes in ‘packed’ shopping centre on last Saturday before Christmas

The Sheffield shopping centre was ‘packed’ despite the concerns about the Omicron variant

Shoppers have descended on Meadowhall on what is the last Saturday before Christmas in spite of concerns about rising coronavirus figures.

YorkshireLive reporter Phoebe Fuller went to the Sheffield shopping centre today (Saturday) to get a feel for how busy it was as people got their Christmas shopping finished.

Phoebe said it was “packed” in the car park but that it was noticeably less quiet than expected inside the huge site, with queues typically snaking around the lanes around this time of year.

She said: “It wasn’t as busy as I thought it’d be, no queues for any of the shops except Lush and even that was only a small queue.

“It was a bit of a squeeze at times, because there was no one-way system so everyone was just pushing past each other which made it difficult to navigate the narrower areas at times. But otherwise it was not as busy as I’d have expected the last Saturday before Christmas to be!”

There were also fears over not enough people wearing masks inside the large shopping centre.

@financejon tweeted: “@LoveMeadowhall Quite appalling to see so many people not wearing masks here today. No effort being made by Meadowhall to reduce the chances of getting infected for Xmas. Stay safe if you can!”

Martin Kearney added: “It’s no wonder the cases are rising… I’m shopping in Meadowhall, Sheffield and half the people in here aren’t wearing masks.”

It comes after town and city centres around Yorkshire were less busy than usual on Friday night following new guidance and updates given this week about the Omicron variant.

The advice from chief medical officer Chris Whitty to limit contact with others in the lead up appears to have spread to the shopping centres as well, with less shoppers than expected at Meadowhall.

The number of daily cases reached its highest number since the start of the pandemic on two occasions this week and today (Saturday) there were 90,418 lab-confirmed Covid-19 cases have recorded in the UK.
