Tragedy as young man dies on M1 near Rotherham in ‘incident’ that shut motorway for 5 hours

A man in his 20s has tragically died after an incident on the M1 in South Yorkshire.

The M1 southbound was closed for more than five hours, due to a “police led incident” between junction 35 and junction 34 near Rotherham.

Officers from South Yorkshire Police were on the scene after reports of a concern for safety of a man at junction 34.

A spokesperson has confirmed that the man, aged in his 20s, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

They said: “Police were called at around 9.19pm yesterday evening (16 December) to reports of a concern for the safety of a man at junction 34 of the M1.

“Officers attended the scene and sadly a man in his 20s was pronounced dead at the scene. His death is not being treated as suspicious.”

The carriageway was closed from around 9.40pm on Thursday and reopened shortly after 3am this morning.
