A video released by police shows the horrifying moment a drink driver lost control over her car in Sheffield.

Nicola West, 44, can be seen driving along Ridgeway Road, near to Manor Top, on July 6 at around 8.30am before crashing into the concrete base of a support post for the tram network.

West, of Mickley Lane, Totley, was found to be four times over the legal limit at the time with 353 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

West appeared at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court on December 3 where she pleaded guilty.

She was disqualified from driving for 48 months and handed a 15-week prison sentence, suspended for 15 months, 100 hours of community service and ordered to pay £85 in costs and a £128 victim surcharge.

The conviction comes during South Yorkshire Police’s Christmas Drink Drive Campaign 2021 in conjunction with the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership and serves as a timely reminder of the dangers of getting behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol.

Sergeant Matt Duffy of SYP’s Roads Policing team, said: “We hope this goes to show that drink driving will not be tolerated on the roads of South Yorkshire.

“Luckily in this instance, nobody was badly hurt. But often this is not the case. When you get behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol and drugs it is not just your life you are putting in danger but those of everyone around you.

“This can be fellow drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, public transport users. Please think twice about ever getting behind a wheel in this state.”

SYP are reminding drivers to have #NoneForTheRoad if they are going to be getting in a vehicle this Christmas.

There is no way of knowing what a “safe amount” of alcohol is in your blood and any amount of alcohol or drugs impacts on safety.

You are three times more likely to crash if you have any alcohol in your blood and driving under the influence of drugs doubles the likelihood of being involved in a collision.
