Doncaster could soon become a city following the council’s bid for the borough to be granted city status.

The town has entered a competition launched to give towns the honour as part of celebrations for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee next year.

Announcing the news online, Doncaster Council has asked residents to get behind its fourth attempt to secure city status.

“We believe the time is right, given how far we have come, that Doncaster City becomes a reality,” it said.

The council added: “Lots of people already think we are a city – and we are in all but name. We think, look and behave like a city and we have so much more than a lot of cities already.

“We’re also carrying the flag for Yorkshire and bidding to become the national home for the new Great British Railways (GBR), bringing jobs and investment outside of London. “

It is hoped gaining city status will boost tourism in the area and help to give Doncaster a stronger voice.

Mayor Ros Jones, chair of the Team Doncaster partnership, is backing the bid.

She said: “I am immensely proud of Doncaster and I want it to become one of the UK’s newest cities. We have a 10 year plan Team Doncaster is working to drive this borough forward , brightening all our futures.

“I know Doncaster is already on the map for so many brilliant things and certainly this royal stamp of approval will boost our fortunes even further.”

Doncaster is home to an international airport, a wildlife park, a racecourse, and one of only three Mansion Houses in the country.

The competition has a set of criteria for entrants to meet, including having a distinct identity, civic pride, a record of innovation, and royal associations.

The council hopes residents will back the bid by sharing their love of Doncaster online using #GoingForItDN, ahead of the bid deadline on December 8.

An announcement is expected in 2022.
