The group’s website says: “The climate crisis is reaching devastating levels. We are heading at lightning speed towards an ecological abyss of untold suffering.

“If walking 1,000 km under the notorious British weather can help raise awareness that our future and that of generations to come is at stake in Glasgow, then it will all be worth it.”

Yorkshire-based activist groups will be welcoming the Spaniards and providing shelter for the night, as well as throwing a farewell ceremony to send them on their way the next day.

The festivities are planned for 9-10am Thursday by Sheffield Town Hall.

Hosted by Sheffield and South Yorkshire (SCCUG) COP26 Coalition, the event will bring together various local campaign groups, including Stand Up To Racism Sheffield, Extinction Rebellion Sheffield, and Sheffield Climate Campaign Umbrella Group.

There will be performances by Extinction Rebellion’s Samba band and a choir, and the public are invited to join the group as they begin their onward march.
