M18 horror crash near Doncaster causes travel chaos as four-car pile up shuts motorway for hours

Dramatic pictures have been shared showing the aftermath of a four-vehicle collision near Doncaster that shut the motorway for hours.

The M18 northbound near Doncaster was closed on Wednesday causing all traffic to be held as emergency services including paramedics and firefighters were called to the scene between J4 and J5.

Two of those involved in the crash were rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

The road was closed around at around 2.30pm and wasn’t reopened again until later in the evening.

South Yorkshire Police have today (Thursday) released an appeal calling for anyone who witnessed the accident or has dash cam footage to get in touch.

Pictures have also been shared of the aftermath of the collision, which can be viewed in the gallery below.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: “Officers from our Roads Policing Group are appealing for information or any dash cam footage following a four-vehicle collision on the M18 near to Doncaster yesterday (Wednesday).

“It is reported that at about 2.10pm a white Citroen Relay van was involved in a collision with a silver Honda Accord, white Ford Transit and a white Volkswagen Passat.

“A passenger in the Honda, a man aged in his 60s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries where he remains in a critical condition. The driver of the Honda was taken to hospital with serious, but not life threatening, injuries.

“The drivers of the Citroen, Ford and Volkswagen were all treated at the scene for minor injuries.

“Did you witness either vehicle prior to this collision, or saw what happened? If so, please contact police. You can report information either via 101, through our new online portal, or footage can be emailed to enquiries@southyorks.pnn.police.uk. The incident number to quote is 461 of 6 October.”
