The father to some of the victims leaves flowers at the scene in Chandos Crescent, Killamarsh, near Sheffield, where four people were found dead at a house on Sunday.

“Close family of the victims have now been made aware and specially trained officers are with them. We would ask that people avoid speculation and allow for space at this distressing time.”

The father of two of the children, Jason Bennett, posted a tribute to his son and daughter John and Lacey online and has been to the site of the tragedy to lay flowers this morning (Monday). Read the heartbreaking tribute from their dad here.

He said Lacey was having a sleepover that night with her best friend, who he said was the third child victim, and the mother of the two children, who has been identified locally as Terri Harris, had also died.

“We found out what had happened yesterday tea time. Dad (Jason) was on holiday in Devon. He had to drive home knowing he had lost his children.

“Lacey, 11, was a West Ham fan and John a Sheffield Wednesday fan.

“Lacey’s best friend was over for a sleepover. Her parents have got to be devastated.”

Debbie Bennett added: “My Jason is going to be in bits.

“He will be blaming himself, there will be the ‘what ifs’ and ‘what if that’.

“I don’t know how he is going to come through this. He is going to need a lot of strength.”

One person also paid tribute to Terri on Facebook, writing: “R.I.P to a dear friend and her babies. I can’t believe what has happened. Stay safe hun, you and your babies.”

There has been an outpouring of grief among the shocked community, with one woman who has lived there for 40 years saying: “We don’t get stuff like this here. It’s shocking, I know we get kids fighting but never anything like this.

“It’s been a quiet spot for years but they’ve started building a lot [of properties in the area] and it’s got a bit rowdy.”

Outwood Academy, which has schools in Chesterfield and Sheffield, has closed today as the three children were all pupils at the school. Read the full statement from the school here.

Outwood Academy City said that it would remain open to children who need support following the tragic loss of three of their pupils.

Detective Chief Inspector Rob Routledge, who is leading the investigation team, said: “We would really like to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the early hours of this morning or has any information which they think could help with our inquiries.

“No matter how small you think that information may be, please do get in touch with us.”
