The Sheffield schools where pupils are expected to wear masks – and the ones where they do not have to bother

share close

Though it is no longer law for people in England to wear a face covering in enclosed public spaces, some schools have continued to mandate that pupils and staff wear a mask on site.

In schools across Sheffield, the rules on mask wearing have been interpreted differently – with some schools requiring students to wear masks in busy, communal areas; and some schools scrapping masks altogether.

Many schools across the city are relying on guidance from the Department of Education, following the advice carefully and being prepared to change their approach as and when necessary.

The Department of Education has stopped recommending the use of face masks in educational settings, stating that it is no longer advised for pupils, staff or visitors – in classrooms or communal areas.

Their detailed guidance states: “Face coverings are no longer advised for pupils, staff and visitors either in classrooms or in communal areas.

“The government has removed the requirement to wear face coverings in law but expects and recommends that they are worn in enclosed and crowded spaces where you may come into contact with people you don’t normally meet. This includes public transport and dedicated transport to school or college.”

But, despite this advice, a number of Sheffield secondary schools are still encouraging their students to cover their face when they move between lessons or when they are on a break.

YorkshireLive contacted 31 secondary schools in Sheffield – excluding independent and special schools – to find out what their rules on face masks were as of today (September 14).

Where a school did not respond directly to our request for comment, we searched the school’s website to see if information on the wearing of masks was available there instead.

Nearly half of those schools either had the information available on their website, or responded to YorkshireLive’s direct request for comment and, out of the 12 that did, five schools had a mask-wearing requirement.
