The family of a disabled Rotherham United fan mocked during last month’s South Yorkshire derby with Doncaster Rovers have penned a heartfelt letter of thanks for “overwhelming” support and kindness.

Horrific footage of Rovers fans in the away end of the New York Stadium mimicking a ‘stimming’ Millers fan emerged soon after the final whistle during Rotherham’s 2-0 win on Saturday, August 28.

The footage was widely condemned by both sets of supporters and sparked calls for the two fans to be banned from the club.

Both clubs contacted the fan who was on the receiving end of the abuse and efforts were made to accommodate VIP treatment during a future fixture.

Doncaster Rovers previously said they had identified the two fans behind the horrendous gesture and will take appropriate action.

According to Autism.org.uk, stimming, or self-stimulating behaviour includes arm or hand-flapping, finger-flicking, rocking, jumping, spinning or twirling, head-banging and complex body movements.

It includes the repetitive use of an object, such as flicking a rubber band or twirling a piece of string, or repetitive activities involving the senses (such as repeatedly feeling a particular texture).

The family of the Millers fan wrote an open letter to supporters of both clubs, the two teams and South Yorkshire Police for their help and support.

It read: “We would like to thank South Yorkshire Police, Rotherham United, Doncaster Rovers and both sets of fans for their overwhelming support and kindness following the sad incident which occurred during the local derby.

“We would like to give a special mention to Sarah Feher whose quick thinking has brought the unacceptable behaviour of those individuals in question to light.

“We never knew that there was so much love and understanding out there and we would like to wholeheartedly thank everyone who has shown their support.

“Thanks again.”

It was the last time that would happen. By the time the briefing was over, the early stages of the attacks were already under way. A few […]
