Woman arrested after ‘disgusting’ racist comments about death of tragic Afghan refugee who fell from hotel window

A woman has been arrested after posting “disgusting” comments online about the death of a five-year-old refugee.

The woman, who has not been named, was arrested by officers from South Yorkshire Police in Sheffield this morning (August 20) on suspicion of “malicious communications and racially aggravated public order offences”.

Police confirmed that the woman has been arrested in connection with comments that were posted beneath the news that five-year-old Mohammed Monib Majeedi – a refugee from Afghanistan – had died in Sheffield.

The little boy, who is understood to have arrived in Sheffield on the weekend with his family after fleeing the Taliban, tragically fell to his death from the window of a room at the OYO Sheffield Metropolitan Hotel in Blonk Street, on Wednesday August 18.

South Yorkshire Police have confirmed that the woman arrested remains in police custody at this time.

Acting Detective Inspector Lee Corker said: “I would like to remind people that comments made online can have serious consequences.

“Hate speech or hate crimes will not be tolerated in person or online, and will be dealt with robustly by officers.

“Our social media channels are monitored, and whilst we encourage discussion, offensive comments may be investigated. Please consider the impact your words may have before you post.”

People on social media have celebrated the arrest, calling it “disgusting” and “racist”.

And one person commented: “Disgusting vile pig!”

Officers from South Yorkshire Police are continuing to look into the circumstances surrounding the little boy’s tragic death, which has rocked the Sheffield community.

Residents living nearby spoke of their shock, sadness and “sleepless night” after the tragedy which happened at around 2.30pm on Wednesday.

One local told our reporter yesterday: “It was so upsetting. I came out here [onto Blonk Street] and saw the boy. There were police and ambulances here.

“I did not sleep at all last night. It was so sad. I think the boy was very young. Maybe 4, 5 or 6.”
