Police have said that the boy who tragically died after falling from a hotel window in Sheffield was younger than 10 years old.

South Yorkshire Police have said that the boy who fell from a window at the Sheffield Metropolitan Hotel is “believed to be under 10”.

There was a large police presence in place on Blonk Street this afternoon (Wednesday) and the NCP car park next to the hotel was closed to the public.

Tributes to the young boy and well wishes his family have been paid by the many who have been left shocked and saddened by the “heartbreaking” news.

“My heart goes out to the family. I’m so very sorry”, one person posted.

Another person wrote: “How awful. God bless you little one. Deepest sympathy to the family. Fly high sweetheart.”

Another post read: “That’s terrible news. Can’t begin to imagine the family’s hell they’re going through. Rip little man.”

One tribute said: “What awful painful news poor lad, thinking of his family and friends”.

“Heartbreaking R.I.P. little one, condolences and prayers for the family and friends,” added one more.

A spokewoman for South Yorkshire Police said this evening: “We are not sure of the age of the boy but he is believed to be under 10.”

She also said that there is no update on the circumstances of the incident and “unlikely” to be one tonight.

In a statement earlier today, the force said: “We are sorry to share a boy has sadly died after falling from a building in Sheffield this afternoon.

“Emergency services were called to the Sheffield Metropolitan Hotel on Blonk Street, Sheffield at around 2.30pm today (August 18) after reports the boy had fallen from a window.

“The boy’s family are being supported by specially trained officers. No formal identification has taken place yet.

“Enquiries are in the early stages to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.”

The force had posted earlier in the day saying there was a “large presence” at the scene and asked people to avoid the area.
