Health Secretary Sajid Javid has tested positive for coronavirus and has mild symptoms, he has said.

In a tweet, he wrote: “This morning I tested positive for Covid.

“I’m waiting for my PCR result, but thankfully I have had my jabs and symptoms are mild.

“Please make sure you come forward for your vaccine if you haven’t already.”

On Tuesday, Mr Javid was visiting a care home in Streatham, south London, and earlier that day he was in parliament.

Mr Javid was made health secretary last month after Matt Hancock left the role following video of him kissing one of his advisers.

The new health secretary got the positive test from a lateral flow test that he took after feeling “a bit groggy” last night and he says he is now self-isolating at home with his family.

Mr Javid, who has had both jabs of a vaccine, said he was awaiting a confirmation PCR test after initially testing positive for COVID-19.

“I was feeling a bit groggy last night, so I took a lateral flow test this morning and it’s come out positive, so I’m now self-isolating at home with my family until I get the results of a PCR test,” he said in a video posted to his Twitter account.

“I’m grateful that I’ve had two jabs of the vaccine and so far my symptoms are very mild.”

During his visit to Aashna House care home in Streatham earlier this week, Mr Javid said he wanted to “thank care home staff” and “staff across the country for the incredible work they have been doing.”

He said: “Their job is hard enough in normal times, but of course during the pandemic, it was so much harder.”

He added that reforms in the social care sector will be a “huge priority” for him.

Mr Javid started his new role last month as the new health secretary, replacing Matt Hancock who resigned after leaked CCTV showed him kissing aide and former lobbyist Gina Coladangelo in his departmental office.

Former chancellor and home secretary Mr Javid said he was “honoured” to be appointed to the role – just 90 minutes after Downing Street announced Mr Hancock had quit.

Earlier, Mr Javid commented on holidaymakers returning to England from France having to self-isolate when they get back even if they are fully vaccinated.

He said: “We have always been clear that we will not hesitate to take rapid action at our borders to stop the spread of COVID-19 and protect the gains made by our successful vaccination programme.”

Former health secretary Mr Hancock was ill with COVID-19 early in the pandemic last year, while Prime Minister Boris Johnson spent several days in intensive care with the virus in April 2020.
