The 15 pick your own fruit farms open in Yorkshire this summer

Is there anything better than a punnet of fresh British strawberries on a warm summer’s day?

Well, here at YorkshireLive we think that the only thing better than eating them is picking them and we have rounded up some spots right here in Yorkshire, where you can visit for a day’s spent picking your own fruit.

And it is not just strawberries that are ripe for the picking – gooseberries, rhubarb and currants are also in season – or soon to be – throughout the county.

Strawberry picking is the perfect sunny-day family activity and kids love the excitement of harvesting their own food, though it is not just for kids, as us adults enjoy a day at the fruit fields too.

If you fancy a day in the fields, you can find your nearest fruit-picking spot below.

North Yorkshire

The Balloon Tree, Farmshop and Cafe – Gate Helmsley, York, YO41 1NB

The Balloon Tree in York offer a pick your own ‘trail’ with gooseberries, rhubarb and classic British strawberries – all ripe for the picking!

Outside of the school holidays, the pick your own service will be running as a walk-in from Monday to Friday (booking required on weekends).

When school holidays start in July, the farm will require you to pre-book your time slot.

Cedarbarn Farm Shop and Cafe – Pickering, YO18 7JX

Strawberry picking is available at Cedarbarn from now all the way until October, thanks to the six different varieties of berry grown that ripen at different times of the year.

Also available on a pick your own basis are gooseberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants and blueberries which are available throughout June and July.

Available for walk-ins from 9am to 3pm daily.

Birchfield Family Dairies – Harrogate, HG3 4JS

At Birchfield Family Dairies, strawberry picking is now available and they have had a banner year, with the fields full to bursting with deliciously ripe strawberries.

No booking required so you are free to walk in and pick your own, with the fields open until 6pm on some days.

Spuds and Berries – Selby, YO8 6EL

The strawberries are ready for picking at Spuds and Berries in Selby and they are now taking walk-ins for pick your own.

The pick your own fields and the farm shop are both open daily from 9am until 5.30pm.

Spilmans – Sessay, Thirsk, YO7 3NB

The pick your own calendar at Spilmans is available until August, so there is plenty of time for you to head down and pick a punnet of strawberries.

You need to visit the website and book a timed ticket slot online, to comply with Covid rules and to ensure that the fields remain safe and socially distanced.

It is not just strawberries that are available though, also on offer are gooseberries, raspberries, blackberries, potatoes and sunflowers that are ready to pick up until September at different times.

Hutton Bonville – Northallerton, DL7 0NR

Hutton Bonville have plenty of strawberries available this year, with walk-in pick your own available daily from 10am to 5pm and last entry at 4.30pm.

Other fruits are also expected to be available from mid July, including raspberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants and even tayberries.

Bluebell Farm – Askham Bryan, York, YO23 3QY

Strawberry picking is available at Bluebell Farm daily from 10am to 4pm and there is no booking required.

But it is not just strawberries that are available, gooseberries, rhubarb and currants are also available this summer, though it is advised that you check their Facebook page before setting off to make sure that they have not all been picked.

Kemps – Barton-le-Street, Malton, YO17 6PP

The Kemps family have been growing pick your own crops since 1984 and all of the fruit is grown outdoors in the Yorkshire sunshine (and rain!)

Head along to their Barton-Le-Street location for strawberry picking between 1pm and 5pm daily, except Fridays and Sundays when opening hours are 10am to 5pm.

No need to book, but last entry is 30 minutes before closing time.

West Yorkshire

Kemps – Horsforth, Leeds, LS18 5ES

Strawberry picking courtesy of Kemps is also available in Leeds, though tickets are required for pick your own at this location.

Towards the autumn period, you can even head along to pick your own pumpkins.

Farmer Copleys – Pontefract Road, Pontefract, WF7 5AF

Farmer Copleys’ strawberry picking experience is available until August this year, with time-slotted ticket availability daily.

Admission is £2.50 per person (those aged under one go free) and once you are through the door you can stay as long as you like, to pick to your hearts desire.

You will need to book your time slot on Farmer Copleys’ website.

Bentley Grange – Emley, Huddersfield, HD8 9QX

This year, Bentley Grange offers a pick your own service for strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants and redcurrants.

Strawberries are available now, with walk-in availability until 4pm most days.

Raspberries will be available later this week, according to their website and blackcurrants/redcurrants will be available from mid to late July.

Strawberry Fields – Morley, Leeds, LS27 0LX

The four-week season for strawberry picking in Leeds has started, so head over to Strawberry Fields soon to get your hands on some fresh fruit.

No need to book, just walk-in and get picking though it is advised that you check their Facebook page before setting off.

Two sized baskets are available, large at 2.5kg and a small 1kg offering.

Redwood Farm – Ardsley Reservoir, Wakefield, WF3 1EE

Strawberry picking in Wakefield is available daily at Redwood Farm, though they are weather dependent so it is best to check their Facebook page before setting off.

No need to book and no entry fee either, just pick and pay for your goods!

And while you are there you could even stop off to see the ponies or enjoy some refreshments from the farm shop.

South Yorkshire

Eastfield Farm Soft Fruit – Tickhill, Doncaster, DN11 9JD

Eastfield Farm Soft Fruit is available for pick your own throughout the week, between 10am and 6pm (5pm on Sundays).

Last entry for picking is 30 minutes before closing and strawberries are available at £3.70 per kilo.

A. Pearson and Sons – Dronfield Woodhouse, Sheffield, S18 8WS

With a wide array of fruit and vegetable available throughout the year, A. Pearson and Sons is a great place to go fruit picking this summer.

Strawberries are available until mid July, so you better get your skates on but raspberries are available until September, with blackcurrants and rhubarb also available.

From August to September you can also pick broad beans and peas are available from mid August to October, red and white currants, french beans and runner beans are also available throughout the year.
