Hunt for cruel boys seen shooting swan near park

Police are hunting two teenage boys after reports a swan was shot in Barnsley.

A member of the public told South Yorkshire Police they had witnessed two young boys shoot a swan with an air rifle on the River Dearne, close to Middlewood Park in Darfield, on Sunday (June 27) at around 4.10pm.

The boys, who were described as being around 15-years-old, fled the scene in the direction of Doncaster Road.

Officers attended the scene but were unable to find the boys and could also not find the injured swan.

South Yorkshire Police are now asking for any witnesses or anyone with information about the attack to come forward.

A spokesperson said: “Police in Darfield are appealing for information after reports that a swan was shot.

“Police received a report from a member of the public that at around 4.10pm on Sunday, June 27, two boys were witnessed shooting a swan with an air rifle on the River Dearne, close to Middlewood Park.

“The boys, who are described as approximately 15-years-old, fled the scene in the direction of Doncaster Road.

“Officers attended the scene and conducted a search for the boys, and attempted to locate the wounded swan to no gain. Enquiries are ongoing to locate those responsible.

“Officers are now asking for any information that might help them in their investigation. Were you in the area at the time? Do you know who might be responsible?”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 quoting incident number 651 of 27 June, or pass information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
