Men in Yorkshire are among the most sexually challenged in Britain, with those in South Yorkshire particularly badly affected.

NHS data which shows the spending-by-area on erectile dysfunction drugs has revealed the top three areas in the country, with Doncaster and Rotherham included in the list.

The third area was also in Yorkshire, which shows that men in Yorkshire take more pills to help with their bedroom problems than anywhere else, the Mirror reports.

Doncaster topped the list, with Bradford coming second and Rotherham in third place.

Areas in the South had the lowest NHS spend on erectile dysfunction meds, with Hounslow and Hillingdon in West London and the wealthy counties of Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire among the lowest spenders.

Academics from the University of Birmingham and Warwick Business School have linked erectile dysfunction to financial deprivation, as GPs in the poorest areas of the UK issuing 21 per cent more prescriptions for medication than those in the wealthiest areas.

Dr Vibhu Paudyal, co-author of the research, said: “Risk factors for erectile dysfunction, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and mental health conditions, are more prevalent in areas of deprivation.”

And it is even worse news for South Yorkshire, as Barnsley also made the top 10 list, along with the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Prescriptions nationally have been steadily rising – up 400,000 in five years to 4.4 million last year.

The most popular of the drugs prescribed was Sildenafil, the generic name of Viagra, which works by increasing blood flow.
