The UK has recorded its highest number of new confirmed coronavirus cases since late February.

As of 9am on Wednesday, there had been a further 7,540 lab-confirmed cases in the UK, the highest single-day rise since February 26, the government said.

It comes after hospital admissions in England reached their highest point since April, according to NHS data.

A total of 131 hospital admissions of people with coronavirus in England were reported for just one day on June 7, which is up from 98 admissions the previous week.

This is the highest number of admissions since April 19 and the seven-day average for new hospital admissions is now at its highest since April 27.

Meanwhile, people in Kirklees are being asked to minimise travel in and out of the area and to “meet people outside rather than inside where possible”.

This is the new advice from the government as the Delta variant continues to push case numbers ever higher in the district.

People are also being told to keep two metres from each other, work from home where they can, get tested for coronavirus twice a week and self-isolate if receiving a positive test.
