Interactive map shows Yorkshire’s favourite illegal drugs in every area

Amphetamines are Yorkshire and the Humber’s favourite drug after cannabis.

The latest figures from the Home Office have revealed that a total of 26kg of amphetamines were seized by police in the region in 2019/20 – down from 36kg seized the year before.

Despite the decrease, that’s still enough for 520,000 typical 50mg “doses” of amphetamines – or one for every 11 people living in Yorkshire and the Humber.

It suggests the stimulants – which include speed – are the most popular drug in the region, apart from cannabis.

That varies at a local level, however – while North Yorkshire and Humberside both appeared to favour amphetamines, in South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire more cocaine was seized than anything else (apart from cannabis).

Cannabis remains the most popular drug in Yorkshire and the Humber and around the world.

A total of 292kg of herbal cannabis, 23kg of cannabis resin and 38,589 cannabis plants were seized by police in the region in 2019/20.

Police also seized 12kg of cocaine, 2kg of heroin, 2kg of crack and 9,000 ecstasy pills in the last year, among other drugs.

While the quantities of drugs seized in an area don’t always reflect the amount of drugs being taken, they give a good indication of their popularity.

Nationally, cocaine is the most popular drug after cannabis.

Across England and Wales, 519kg of cocaine was seized by police in the last year – or enough for one “dose” for every six people.

A further 3,755kg of cocaine was seized by the UK Border Force from people attempting to smuggle it into the country.

However, the figures show an interesting north/south divide when it comes to drugs.

While cocaine is generally the most popular drug, northern communities appear more likely to favour amphetamines.
