Tributes have been paid to a Penistone ‘legend’ and community hero who sadly died last Thursday.

Steve Reid, who passed away aged 70, was chairman of Penistone Cricket Club and described as a ‘true gentleman’ by the club.

In a statement, the club said: “A true gentleman, legend and amazing guy will be sadly missed by us all.

“Steve was not just a massive part of the cricket club, but of the wider Penistone community and the Grammar school.

“It has been amazing to see all the comments about how Steve touched and influenced so many people’s lives and how highly regarded held he was by all that knew him.

“Everyone will have their favourite Mr Reid story due to his outgoing and charismatic nature.”

People shared tributes online to Mr Reid, the ‘local legend.’

One wrote: “What an absolute proper human being Mr Reid was?! No matter who you were, both our boys were taught win, lose the right way.

“The world is [much] darker without your light in it. What an absolute inspiration to all of us young or old you are. Steve, thank you, mate for everything.”

Another added: “Steve was Mr Penistone Cricket Club – the Umpire, Groundsman, Safeguarding Officer, Coach, Scorer and so much more.

“More importantly a true gentleman who loved his family. He will be massively missed in local senior and junior cricket.”

Mr Reid’s family are calling for friends and family to join them in lining Sheffield Road, the main road between Oxspring and Penistone, on May 6, at 10.30 to pay their respects to Mr Reid.
