Six towns and cities in Yorkshire feature in the top 10 places with the highest coronavirus infection rates in England.

More than 30 areas across the country have seen a week-on-week rise in Covid cases as rates plummet everywhere else.

It’s bad news for Yorkshire as six areas in the region are in the top 10 for the highest Covid infection rates.

Doncaster currently has the second highest Covid rate in the whole of England with Barnsley and Wakefield close behind.

Craven and Scarborough also saw steep week-on-week rises in coronavirus cases but do not feature in the top 10 list.

It comes as more coronavirus rules are set to be relaxed from Monday, April 12.

On Monday lockdown restrictions are set to be eased, with non-essential shops allowed to reopen and pubs allowed to serve customers outdoors.

Boris Johnson this week said he was optimistic that his roadmap to ease lockdown was on track, with June 21 pencilled in as the day all legal restrictions are lifted.

In Yorkshire Doncaster, Barnsley, Wakefield, Hull, Rotherham and Sheffield are all in the top 10 for the highest Covid infection rates in England.

However, figures are encouraging as numbers do reveal that a vast majority of England’s 315 local authority areas have seen a fall.
